Notes:

  • Community Check In
    • @syd (she/they) is thinking about her place in community and in relationships. She is thinking about how fueling it is to meet new people and also how fueling it is to connect with people she has known for a long time.
    • Dan has been reading the news a lot recently and it has him feeling very, very down. He is thinking about foreign policy and his Palestinian friends living through this deep trauma. He recently returned from a trip to the Southwest, and he got to see some California Condors. Nic asked if Dan had noticed any staffing challenges at the national parks Dan visited, but he didn’t seem to notice any troubles.
    • @Nic_McPhee (he/they/whatever) Nic is mostly ignoring the news because it causes aneurysm, and is profoundly behind on almost everything in his job. His sister got to see 500,000 sandhill cranes on the Platte River! Nic is teaching an “ethical and social implications of technology” course, and has been interested in seeing a bunch of young people wrestle with the ethical implications (many are climate related). Working with a bunch of young people willing to engage in hard questions and are interested in dealing with hard things that people in his generation did not deal with.
    • @Susan_Gilbert (she/they) would like to ignore the news, but cannot. As a green card holder, she is paying attention to immigration. She assumes she is safely ignored here in Morris, but is also aware that she doesn’t want to travel and have to engage in it. Susan would like to be the kind of person who meets people, but sadly she is not. She would like to work on that, but her natural inclinations are not that way. They went to the Morris Theatre’s annual meeting, and encourages everyone to go to the Theatre, buy snacks, and help keep the Theatre open. Unless we can find a way to get more people into the Theatre regularly, she is not optimistic for it’s long term survival.
    • Kim has been in town since last June, this is her second WCMNCN meeting. She has also been unsuccessfully avoiding the news. She is excited about the protest in Cyrus this afternoon. She is excited about her friend from Oregon coming to visit on Monday.
    • Vern is here this morning because he wanted to connect with community, but also because he had questions about things going on. He had a heart attack about a month ago, it was a big learning experience for him. He shared about his intelligent son who is a big Trump supporter and how he is practicing withholding judgement. Vern’s intuition is telling him that he is entering a 3rd big epoch of his life (the first two being the depression and WW2). Vern is curious about the MPL situation, the immigration table at the Resource Fair, and the Community Garden. Who is the current 2025 contact for the Community Garden?
