Notes
- Community Check-ins
- @syd is relishing in the calm of being done with a big event
- Kim is struggling with the idea of “crunch time” because she wants to hang out with her son Isaiah before he heads out of town!
- Dan has been thinking about the event at WCROC that was about extreme weather preparedness and how it impacts communities and insurance. He is also thinking about the “good samaritan” story. He asks “can the government be a good samaritan?” He shared a Martin Luther quote about sedition and challenging the tyrants.
- @cberthiaume is thinking about getting their next drawing done. Political stuff is in the background of their mind, but tuning back into their hobbies has been helping them.
- Anna has been thinking about the parents coming to visit this weekend, along with political things and how it impacts USFWS. This week was a good week to do some training and Plant ID and share the good energy between fellow conservationists of loving what they do.
- Hunter has had the political situation more on the forefront of his mind. How will this impact their careers into the future? Having to make decisions on these topics feels heavy.
- @Susan_Gilbert wants to keep off of social media, but she also wants to know what is going on. She shared a project by a group of historians putting together a climate change timeline.
- Mary is currently interning with Troy at the Office of Sustainability. She has been making zines about the campus climate goals, and has been put on the mission to get the green bikes out of the shed for the community to use. She also shared some about her Tree ID work at the Eco Station.
- WCMNCN Refresher
- “To promote individual and group action toward a resilient, equitable and sustainable community through modelling behavioural change, conversation and education.”
- Syd shared about how we have been having WCMNCN meetings for almost 6 years now. It feels reaffirming to see the results of this purpose written so long ago, in such different (yet similar) times.
- Susan shared about how they always tell people that coming to WCMNCN meetings really helps them and gives them a boost because they can share outloud and connect with people. They talked about how easy it is for them to be thinking and raging in their head about IT ALL, and how the relational, resilience, community aspect of this group makes them feel good.
- Announcements
- Upcoming Events (add your own!)
- August 14th, 4PM PDT River Run
- July 30th MN Cooperative Summit: Cooperatively Building a Better World.
- Sue shared about The Zinn Education Project Climate Crisis Timeline. She sent this article which talks about the project and the link to the timeline itself. It is a project to look at history through the lens of climate change (hint, it goes back far).
- Summer Plans
- Farmers Market Tabling
- Could we take a field trip to the EcoStation? Its a long(er) trip.
- We could take a post-meeting field trip to SWELL (Scandia Woods Environmental Learning Lab) north of HWY 28. Bring a sack lunch for a picnic hangout!
- Determine Next Meeting
- Saturday, August 2nd @ 10:30am hybrid meeting online OR at 11 Elm Street
- Post Meeting Field Trip: After the meeting on August 2nd, or during meeting time on August 16th (10:30AM) we will carpool to Scandia Woods Environmental Learning Lab and go on a hike and have a post hike picnic! Everyone should bring their own sack lunch. Syd email out asking which date works better for folks.
